Late January, after a lazy wonderful, fine weathered holiday around home, we went tenting! We thought we knew our tenting days were over but went camping with good friends anyway, just in case there was a gram of enthusiasm anywhere within us. Went to a beautiful East Cape bay called Maraehako, just next to Whanarua Bay.
Well, our packing took twice as long as usual because our hearts really were not in it. I did not even really begin to think about what to take until two or three days prior to the "Great Pack'"! Off we went, amidst weather forecasts of a cyclone heading over to NZ and gusty winds up to xyz kilometres per hour predicted. Murphy's law - Go early in January - weather is unsettled and you will get rain. Plan to go later to avoid rain - weather should be stable by then - oh no, rain hits!
Never mind, off we went. All was well until we looked towards the Motu River and all that could be seen was a gigantic dust storm rising from the native bush.
However, two days were great. The bay was calm and we kayaked and ate crayfish newly caught. Then the rain began. Sitting in the dismal light of the tent, we groaned and thought that maybe this was simply confirmation that the tenting days were over and the plans for a caravan should be activated immediately! We became decisive for one of the first times ever and packed first thing the next morning, despite planning to stay 4 more days. Even bacon and eggs for breakfast could not appease us or coerce us to stay a day longer.
Home we went, stopping to entertain Gran on the way with our crazy antics. Yes, caravanning was looking a certainty by the minute.
So the hunt began in earnest. We searched on Trademe and travelled hither and yon to inspect a few vans, just to see what was out there. Then, with a 'Wanted to buy' ad put in the paper, we found our perfect little 13 foot caravan. Great condition for a 1977 model. A bit of work to do here and there, just because P likes things to be in perfect order, but really it is in wonderful condition. Ahhh, the plans are bubbling away. Briscoes has seen us buy a few little bits and pieces and my linen cupboards have been rifled through to get the little home on wheels set up. Such fun.
A slept out there last night with a friend. P and I have spent a good deal of the weekend sitting in it chatting and planning. It is just like sitting in a park.
"Behold", as God said, we are into a new thing!!!
Yay! Watch this space.
