J's report - Day 3

Today wasn't as hot as other days thankfully because there was a nice breeze all day. Also now that the walls of the house are up sometimes you can be lucky enough to be working in the shade they create. Pretty much all of the bricks have been laid now except for a few little thing which need doing, and we will probably be starting on the roofing tomorrow I imagine. We worked until 5.30pm today though instead of 4.30pm as some houses had to catch up to a certain point. Our house seems to be well on track - the guy in charge seems to manage things well which means we haven't had to take any rows of bricks out and re-do them like some others have had to. Language barrier is difficult though! Can see why the tower of Babel did not get finished once they weren't able to understand each other haha! A couple of the local skilled workers on our house though seem to understand the phrase "all good!" now - accompanied with thumbs up. Quite funny. I think they might also know what we call the hammer as well. Dad and I have decided though that their language is impossible to learn. It has many many more vowels and consonants than ours and the sounds are hard to understand - plus the fact that anything we say in English seems to take 3 times as long for them to say!
Have been coping alright with clothing this week as we have just been building all day and have been wearing work clothes. Get so dirty but you just can't bother with trying to keep the the clothes clean.
Monday and Tuesday night we all ate out a restaurants, but tonight we had dinner at the hotel - which we were very glad of - having to go out again not long after you get home after a long day is not what we feel like doing.
- just got interrupted for a few minutes while writing this - had to help a man whose wife just fainted. They had been sitting in the chairs over behind me and suddenly she was completely out to it. Apparently they had just been in a tuktuk (not sure how you spell that? those motorised rickshaw type things) anyway someone had tried to snatch her handbag while they were in it. Poor lady. They have taken her down to a clinic downstairs now to let her see a doctor. And her poor husband, I think he was really frightened as she took a while to come around. Hope she will be ok soon.
Dad has gone over the road with a couple of others for a foot massage! He gave me a couple of points to include on his behalf in this email:
- went out for dinner last night to a restaurant on the river. The interior of the place was nice - took a while to get food though as all us Habitat people create quite a large line!
- the days are really long, so we don't really have time for doing much else like writing emails etc it seems. We have to wake up at 5am and don't get home until around 7ish, then have dinner and by then you are ready to go to bed because you have to get up early again the next day!
- the weather is now a little breezy which is nice, cooler than the first day, but still hot!
- the shower in our hotel room is typical of Asia in the fact that it somehow manages to get most of the bathroom floor wet when you use it!!!
Well think I will go upstairs now and get ready for bed. Will just read my book, which I haven't had a chance to do since arriving here, until Dad gets back. There was a gecko in the room earlier.... I wonder if it is still around.... (better that than a huge spider though!!)
