This morning we all went out to the nearby Tonle Sap Lake (biggest lake in Asia - more like an inland sea) and caught a boat which took us to the floating villages, a most exciting and different activity for us - wait till you see the photos. As well as it being a completely different world to anything experienced so far the notable thing (that reminded us of you) was the boats that came along side with children displaying snakes draped around them or held high to be photographed (hopefully in exchange for dollar or a few riel ). There was also an opportunity to drape a rather large snake around yourself at a floating shop we pulled in to, we both declined though some did do it.
Another bit of excitement occurred at high speed as we zoomed along the river when suddenly a small canoe powered by an outboard motor sprung from the river bank and chased us at speed then served towards us as if to collide, at the last split second it served away but in the same instant delivered a child on board with a basket of cans of drink for sale. Once the business was over the child made an exit in the same breathtaking way . A bit like being attacked and boarded by pirates at high speed.
We saw a floating school, a floating basket ball court, floating church and hundreds and hundreds of little fishing boats that whole families live and work on, even the forest was floating.
Tomorrow some of us plan to visit a sunken forest and villages about 40 minutes from here, this includes another boat ride and possibly a ride amongst a petrified forest and houses on stilts in a dugout canoe...... like Indiana Jones. A last adventure before flying back to Phomn Penh on Friday.
J is sitting next to me on a computer and says she has just checked her Uni results - passed everything and got an A+ for her video documentary and an A+ for her final digital media project. Well done !!!!!
I decided to get an extra set of glasses made (distance) as I was so pleased with my first ones plus a set of prescription sun glasses (driving etc). a good investment I reckon - 4 pairs of glasses for $130!!!!!!!! some with top of the range frames.
We have had a great adventure together and I am not looking forward to going back to work (and strike) next week. We in NZ don't know how lucky and blessed we are when you see how much of the world lives.
